At the request of Cadw a programme of remedial conservation
work was carried out in April 2002 to late-fifteenth century decorated mud straw render panels (possibly the earliest in England) that infill areas of two roof trusses on the upper floor of the north range.

Technical studies, involving sampling and analysis, are required to characterise original and added materials. The information obtained includes not only the materials of the painting, but also the layer structure, typically including overlying layers and accretions. This information is essential for making informed decisions about future conservation and treatment strategies.
